1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 Ram Air – Limited Edition 1/18 Scale Model by GMP

The Pontiac Firebird was first introduced in 1967, aimed at competing with the likes of the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, and other muscle cars of the era.
For 1968, the Firebird received a few styling updates, most notably the adoption of a new, more aggressive front grille design and revised bumpers that were integrated into the bodywork. These updates gave the Firebird a more refined, muscular appearance.

The Ram Air 400 was a special version of this engine, designed to provide better intake and, as a result, more horsepower.
The Ram Air 400 engine produced about 330 horsepower in its standard form, though with the addition of the optional Ram Air package, output could be pushed even further. It was a powerhouse in a compact muscle car package.
With its 400-cubic-inch engine, the Firebird 400 Ram Air was capable of high performance on both the street and the track. The car could accelerate from 0-60 mph in under 7 seconds, a time that was considered very quick for the era.

The 1968 Firebird 400 Ram Air helped solidify Pontiac’s reputation as a performance brand, establishing the Firebird as a legitimate contender in the muscle car market.
The Ram Air system became a hallmark of Pontiac’s high-performance vehicles, and it would continue to be a feature of later models like the Trans Am and other Pontiac muscle cars.

The 1968 Firebird was an eye-catching car, with its sleek, curvaceous body lines and aggressive stance. The Firebird’s design was slightly smaller and more compact than its rivals like the Mustang, giving it a unique visual appeal.
The Ram Air 400 version of the Firebird was often equipped with special visual touches, such as a functional hood scoop, which was a defining characteristic of the car.
The Firebird 400 Ram Air, like other muscle cars of the era, became a symbol of American performance and automotive culture during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
While it may not have been as universally known as the Chevrolet Camaro or Ford Mustang, the Pontiac Firebird—especially the 400 Ram Air—earned respect among car enthusiasts for its performance and unique styling.
The 1968 Firebird 400 has a cult following today. It remains a sought-after classic, especially the Ram Air versions, due to their rarity and the performance credentials they carry.
Today, the 1968 Firebird 400 Ram Air is a valuable collector’s car, especially in original or well-restored condition. Given its place in muscle car history and the fact that it was a low-production model (only a few thousand Firebird 400 Ram Air models were made), these cars command high prices at auctions and among collectors.
